What happens to what you enter

Every calculator here runs entirely on your device. When you type a salary, a vest value or an account balance, that figure is used by code already loaded in your browser and then discarded when you close the tab. There is no request to a server carrying it, so there is nothing at the other end to store, log or leak.

This is not a promise about how carefully we handle your data. It is a statement that we do not receive it.

The one place your figures are written down

When you change an input, the page updates the address in your browser’s location bar so that the scenario can be bookmarked or shared. Your figures are in that address, encoded rather than spelled out, so a copied link does not print your salary in plain text along whatever path it travels.

Encoding is not encryption, and it is not meant to be. Anyone you send the link to can decode it, because that is exactly what makes the link useful. The practical point is this: a link you share carries the numbers you entered. If you would not want someone to see them, do not send them the link.

Cookies, storage and tracking

This site sets no cookies. It writes nothing to your browser’s local storage. There is no advertising network, no social media pixel, no session recording and no cross-site tracking of any kind. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.

There is currently no analytics running on this site at all. No measurement script is loaded, and no request leaves this site’s own server. A test checks that on every page before each release, so it is a fact about what shipped rather than a promise.

Cookieless analytics may be switched on later, and if it is, it will record which page was visited and nothing else. The address of a calculator page contains the figures you entered, so the measurement code deliberately removes everything after the page’s own address before anything is sent. It discards the whole query rather than filtering parts of it. That removal is our own code rather than a setting in someone else’s dashboard, precisely so it can be tested, and it is: the tests fail if a figure ever survives into what would be sent.

Accounts and email

There are no user accounts. Nothing here asks you to register, and there is no database of users because there are no users to put in one. There is no newsletter sign-up and no email capture.

If you email us, we will have your email address and whatever you chose to put in the message, for as long as it takes to answer you. We will not add you to anything or pass it on.

Hosting and server logs

The site is served as static files by a commercial hosting provider. Like essentially every web server, theirs records standard request information for delivery and abuse prevention: the page requested, a timestamp, an IP address, a browser user-agent string. We do not use those logs to build a profile of you, and they contain no calculator inputs, because the inputs are never requested from a server.

Pages here link to primary sources such as IRS and Social Security Administration material, and sometimes to related sites. Once you follow a link you are on someone else’s site under their privacy policy, not this one.

Your rights

Data protection law gives you rights over personal data an organisation holds about you: to see it, correct it or have it deleted. We hold essentially none. No account, no profile, no record of your calculations. If you have emailed us and want that correspondence deleted, ask and it will be.

Changes to this page

If what this site does with data changes, this page changes at the same time, and the date at the top will show it. Ask us if anything here is unclear.
